Hermoupoli is not the kind of destination you visit just to see the sights. It’s a city that demands that you “walk through” it and “listen” to it. Saturday morning: The ritual of shopping

For a local, Saturday begins on Chios Street, the traditional market street.

Saturday morning is a great time to get a first glimpse of the city’s everyday life. Take a stroll down Chios Street and the surrounding alleys, behind the waterfront, and stop for a coffee without rushing to the next stop. In the market shops, you’ll find products associated with Syros, ranging from loukoumia and halvadopites to local cheeses and cured meats. It’s also a good opportunity to buy something now, rather than rushing to find something just before your return ferry.

From there, continue on to Miaouli Square. If it’s open to visitors, it’s worth stopping by the Apollo Theater, one of Hermoupolis’ most distinctive buildings.

Saturday at noon: “Meze” instead of a regular meal

Choose a local meze or tsipouro spot in town rather than a restaurant right on the waterfront just for the view. Order a variety of dishes for lunch and try whatever is related to Syrian cuisine. It’s a more natural way to experience the city’s flavors and, above all, to let lunch become part of your stroll rather than just a stop for a meal.

Must do: Try flavors that are associated with the island. Sausage with fennel, louza, kopanisti, or San Michali PDO, caper salad, and fennel pie, depending on what’s available that day. Pair them with local wine from the Serfiotiko or Monemvasia grape varieties.

Sundays in Hermoupoli are filled with the scent of incense and the sea. Even if you aren’t religious, a visit to Agios Nikolaos during the service is a must to hear the renowned choir. Afterward, follow the locals on the traditional stroll through Vaporia.

The locals’ secret: In winter, a stroll ends with ouzo and meze at the little taverns by the harbor, while in summer it ends with a quick dip at the “steps” below the mansions.

Sunday at noon: The big feast

Since we’re talking about a weekend in Hermoupoli, there’s no reason to leave town for Sunday lunch. Choose a tavern, a traditional restaurant, or a meze bar, and set aside more time than you did for Saturday’s meal. Ask what’s being served that day instead of limiting yourself to the regular menu items.

Sunday afternoon: The last stroll through the city

After Sunday lunch, take a stroll through town—especially if you didn’t get your shopping done on Saturday morning. Then, head back to the beach and sit down for a coffee with a view of the harbor. It’s a great time to see Ermoupoli from the perspective you likely first encountered it, but this time without the rush of arrival.
