Instead of a settlement dominated by small whitewashed houses, Hermoupoli rises around the harbour in an amphitheatrical setting, with colourful façades, marble details, elegant mansions and church domes.

The neoclassical architecture of Hermoupoli is closely connected to the history of the town and its rapid development during the 19th century. The Town Hall, the Apollo Theatre, the mansions of Vaporia and the architectural details found on smaller buildings all reveal different aspects of this period.

The birth of a new town

Modern Hermoupoli began to develop during the Greek War of Independence, when refugees from Chios, Psara, Kasos, Smyrna, Kydonies and other areas settled near the port of Syros. The new settlement was named Hermoupoli after Hermes, the ancient Greek god associated with trade — an appropriate name for a town that would soon become an important commercial centre.

Within a few decades, Hermoupoli developed into a major centre of trade, shipping and industry in the newly established Greek state. Its economic growth was reflected in its architecture. Public buildings, theatres and large urban residences were constructed, many of them following the principles of Neoclassical architecture. Greek and European architects worked in the town, including Wilhelm von Weiler, Pietro Sampo and, later, Ernst Ziller. Ziller designed one of the most recognisable buildings in Hermoupoli today: the Town Hall.

Miaouli Square and the Town Hall

Miaouli Square is an ideal starting point for discovering the architecture of Hermoupoli. The Town Hall dominates one side of the square. Designed by Ernst Ziller, its foundation stone was laid in 1876 and construction was completed in 1898. Its large marble staircase, symmetrical façade and arched ground-floor openings give the building its monumental appearance.

Rather than stopping only for a photograph in front of the Town Hall, take some time to walk around the square. From different points, you can see how the building fits into the surrounding streets and how Miaouli Square became the administrative and social centre of the town.

The Apollo Theatre

A short walk from Miaouli Square leads to the Apollo Theatre, another important building from 19th-century Hermoupoli. Designed by Italian architect Pietro Sampo, construction began in 1862 and the theatre opened in 1864. The presence of such an organised theatre reflects the cultural and social life that had already developed in Hermoupoli at the time.

Its interior, with a central auditorium surrounded by tiers of boxes, follows European theatre design of the period. The Apollo Theatre is often described as a miniature version of La Scala in Milan. Its architecture, however, is more accurately associated with the broader tradition of 19th-century Italian theatres rather than being a direct copy of one particular building.

If the theatre is open during your visit, it is worth seeing the interior as well as the exterior.

Vaporia: Mansions by the Sea

From the centre of Hermoupoli, continue towards Vaporia, one of the town’s most distinctive neighbourhoods. Large residences were built here by wealthy merchants and shipowners. Standing on the rocky coastline, the tall buildings overlooking the Aegean create one of the most recognisable views of Syros.

Their façades, marble details, balconies and generous proportions reflect the prosperity that Hermoupoli experienced during the 19th century. Some historic residences also preserve features such as high ceilings, painted decoration and wooden floors.

On the way to Vaporia, you will also pass the Church of Agios Nikolaos. Its construction began in 1848 and was completed in 1870. Its distinctive blue dome has become an important part of the area’s skyline.

Architectural details worth noticing

The architecture of Hermoupoli is not limited to its major public buildings. As you walk through the streets, take some time to look at the smaller houses and their façades. Entrances are often framed by marble surrounds, decorative lintels and pilasters, while balconies feature metal railings and carved marble supports in a variety of designs.

Colour is another characteristic of Hermoupoli. Ochre, earthy tones, pale pink and light blue create a palette that is noticeably different from the predominantly white settlements associated with many other Cycladic islands.

It is also worth looking above street level. Along commercial streets, ground floors may have changed use many times over the years, while the upper floors often preserve more of the building’s original architectural character.

Exploring Hermoupoli on foot

Hermoupoli is best explored on foot, although the streets become steeper and there are more steps as you move away from the waterfront. A good route begins at the port and continues towards Miaouli Square and the Town Hall, followed by a visit to the Apollo Theatre. From there, walk towards the Church of Agios Nikolaos and Vaporia. This route brings together several of the town’s most important architectural landmarks in a single walk.

If you have more time and do not mind walking uphill, continue towards the higher parts of Hermoupoli. From there, you can better appreciate how the town rises around the harbour and how it connects with Ano Syros on the hill above.

A town that still lives in its historic buildings

One of the most interesting aspects of Hermoupoli is that its Neoclassical buildings are not simply preserved as historic monuments. The Town Hall remains an administrative centre, the Apollo Theatre continues to host cultural events, and Vaporia is still a residential neighbourhood. Shops, offices and homes occupy buildings that form part of the town’s architectural heritage.

For this reason, it is worth walking through Hermoupoli more than once during your stay. In the morning, natural light makes it easier to notice details on the façades. In the evening, illuminated Miaouli Square, the Town Hall and the streets of the historic centre offer a different view of the same town.

Staying in Hermoupoli gives you the freedom to discover its architecture at your own pace. You can wander through Miaouli Square after dinner, explore the mansions of Vaporia in the afternoon or enjoy the harbour early in the morning, before the streets become busy.Located on the waterfront, just a short walk from the historic centre, Shapes Luxury Suites is a convenient starting point for exploring the town.
